The newly formed Citizen Action Party today staged a one-day dharna in Gangtok at Sikkim protesting the “foreigner” slur on the Sikkimese Nepali community recently in a Supreme Court Judgement.

The political outfit is also deciding on holding a dharna at Jantar Mantar at Delhi which the party chief Co-Ordinator Ganesh Kumar Rai maintained will be fixed by Thursday evening. Rai also questioned the steps being taken by the Sikkim government regarding the issue, alleging that they had not been taking this matter seriously. He said that it was not easy to file a review petition which the Sikkim CM had been claiming while adding that the Sikkim government had not even called an emergency legislature meeting or a special assembly session.

The judgment in question had been passed by the Supreme Court of India on 13th of January this year. In it an observation was seen being made claiming that people of “foreign origin” like the Nepalis had settled in Sikkim which has been facing opposition from many fronts. The judgement was on a writ petition filed on the Sikkim Income Tax Manual by the Association of Old Settlers of Sikkim.
