The Sealdah Court in Kolkata, West Bengal, has found Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the case of rape and murder of a trainee female doctor at the popular RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, guilty of the crime.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Sealdah Court Anirban Das convicted Roy under Sections 64, 66 and 103 of the Indian Penal Code, on Saturday, 57 days after the trial started on 11 November.
“You must be punished,” the judge said in his remarks, convicting Roy, who will be sentenced on Monday, 20 January.
Those in the know said that Roy may be handed the death penalty as the maximum sentence or life in prison. Until then, Roy has been sent to judicial custody.
On August 9 last year, the body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital. Investigations revealed that the victim was raped and murdered.
Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on the basis of CCTV footage and evidence that they gathered from the crime scene. An uproar followed the incident in West Bengal, while people protested the crime across the country, demanding justice for the victim against the incident.
Doctors put up protests for a long time, demanding strict punishment for the culprits. Later, the Calcutta High Court handed over the responsibility of investigating the case to the CBI. The CBI had named Sanjay Roy as the main accused in its charge sheet and demanded death sentence.
