In a shocking incident, a debt-ridden man is believed to have killed his wife and his six-year-old son before committing suicide at the Samarnagar area at Champasari in Siliguri on Thursday.
As news spread and police from the bhaktinagar police station in Siliguri rushed to the scene, they found the body of Shyamal Roy hanging next to the bodies of Tumpa Roy, his wife, and Pintu Roy.
A police team under Inspector-in-charge of the Bhaktinagar police station, Amit Adhikari, also reached the spot and recovered the bodies and sent them to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
“Though it is said that Shyamal Roy took this extreme step as he was in heavy debt, the exact cause of the deaths will be known only after investigations are over,” a police officer said.
Roy’s neighbours, meanwhile, claimed that Roy was “drowned in debt” and that the husband-wife duo would often be seen fighting.
“The incident has sent shivers down everyone’s spine in the area. However, we do not know why exactly Shyamal Roy killed his wife and son. Most of us feel that it was because of the debts that he had,” a neighbour, Bablu Barman, said.
The police officer said that they have started investigations.
