A tourist from Purva Bardhaman in West Bengal died after he fell ill at a homestay at the popular Hill destination Sittong in Kurseong, Darjeeling, on Wednesday, officials said.
The deceased has been identified as 55-year-old Raj Narayan De from Purva Bardaman district in the state.
It is learnt that eight tourists from three families from Bardaman were visiting Sittong and had put up at the Ekant Homestay under Sittong Gram Panchayat-3.
“One of them fell ill and was taken to the Rambi rural hospital nearby, when he died,” a Rambi police source said, adding that the doctors at the hospital declared him ‘brought-dead.’
“Upon hearing about the incident, the Rambi Police reached the hospital and sent the body of the tourist to the Kalimpong District Hospital, under which the area falls, for post-mortem,” the police officer said.
According to the owner of the Ekant Homestay, one of the eight tourists had heart problems and was a diabetic and that he was not feeling well and was given some medicine in the evening.
“However, there was no improvement in his health. He was taken to the Rambi Health Centre for treatment at 6 am this (Wednesday) morning, and the doctor at the Rambi Hospital declared him dead,” Anju Raj Rai, the owner, said.
