A 58-year-old tourist from Hoogly died in Darjeeling on Sunday night after he fell ill.
Dibanjan Saha a resident of Bhadreswar in Hoogly district was pronounced dead when he was taken to Darjeeling district hospital.
Six persons including Dibanjan from Hoogly and nearby areas were staying in a home stay facility at Lamahata a popular tourist destination, which is one hour long drive from Darjeeling.
Babul Biswas who was accompanying Dibanjan for Lamahata trip said " We six people came by car to Lamahata on Saturday. Today Dibanjan and others went to Darjeeling from Lamahata, but I stayed back. They came back to Lamahata from Darjeeling in the evening. Immediately after, Dibanjan fell sick and we rushed him to Darjeeling where doctors declared him brought dead "
According to Babul, Dibanjan was under medication for various ailments like heart issue, sugar and thyroid. He used to run cycle garage near Bhadreswar railway station.
Sources said, Dibanjan who has left behind his wife and son, was very enthusiastic as far as visiting Darjeeling hills was concerned.
He had visited Sitong another popular tourist destination in August- September.
This time he had insisted to visit Lamahata despite not being in the best of his health condition, said another man accompanying him.
Rajesh Chowan, the deputy chairman of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration said " We will extend all possible help and provide ambulance to take the body to Kolkata after post mortem was conducted."
The tourists were supposed to return homes on Monday.
