Hoteliers in Siliguri on Monday decided to bar tourists from Bangladesh from staying in their properties. The indefinite ban in Siliguri comes close on the heels of hotels in Assam and Tripura banning tourists from the strife-torn neighbouring country.
Addressing a press conference in Siliguri on Monday, office bearers of the Greater Siliguri Hoteliers’ Welfare Association said that though the decision would mean losses for those in the hotel industry, the nation and her interests were paramount in such situations.
“The insult there to our national flag is not an insult to the country alone, it is an insult to all of us,” the president of the Greater Siliguri Hoteliers’ Welfare Association, Rajiv Das, said.
Protests have erupted in India following the arrest of an ISKCON priest in Bangladesh, and against the atrocities committed against Hindus in the neighbouring country.
The arrest of ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh has triggered protests in the country, with several organisations demanding his immediate release.
It may be mentioned here that hotels in districts in Assam bordering Bangladesh had on 6 December banned tourists from staying in their properties, while the All Tripura Hotel and Restaurant Owners’ Association had on 2 December decided not to let any Bangladeshi tourist in their hotels across the northeastern state.
