Darjeeling/Siliguri, December 15: The Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) has extended its support to the “one nation, one election” Bill and expressed the hope that the proposed legislation on holding of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and the State Assemblies would receive unanimous support in both the Houses of Parliament.
Maan Ghisingh, the GNLF president, in a press release issued on Sunday said “one nation, one election” will streamline and strengthen both the political and administrative systems of the country. “Apart from bringing down the administrative expenditure, it will also make the democratic system more effective,” he said.
GNLF is a member of the ruling National Democratic Alliance headed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The Union government has listed two Bills related to “one nation, one election” for introduction in the Lok Sabha on December 16. Union Law Minister Meghwal will introduce The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill in the Lower House.
The proposed constitutional amendment Bill would deal with making provisions for holding Lok Sabha and state legislative assembly elections together.
In a separate press release, senior GNLF leader and Darjeeling MLA Neeraj Zimba echoed his party president Ghisingh and said frequent elections had long disrupted governance, drained national resources, and hindered developmental momentum. “The 'One Nation, One Election' Bill offers a comprehensive solution to these challenges by synchronizing elections, thereby reducing costs and enabling governments to focus exclusively on policy implementation and public welfare,” he added.
Zimba assured the people of Darjeeling and the Indian Gorkha community at large that the simultaneous holding of elections was not merely an administrative reform but a step toward greater stability, unity, and progress. “Together, let us make history with the passage of the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill and demonstrate that India’s democracy is not just the largest in the world but the most resilient and forward-looking,” he added.
